From the Gorge to the Bench

I went from counting growth lines in lizard bone to reading urine sediment in a public health laboratory. The specimen changed completely. The discipline did not change at all.

People are sometimes surprised by the move. You did a master's on lizards, and now you work in clinical analysis? As though a career had gone sideways.

It did not feel sideways from inside. Almost everything I was taught by the gorge, I use at the bench.

Both jobs are the same job

A clinical sample and a field survey ask exactly the same four things of you:

  1. Sample honestly. Take what the protocol says to take, not what will be convenient to analyse. A transect where you only record the striking animals and a sample set where you quietly repeat the ambiguous ones are the same error wearing different clothes.
  2. Follow the procedure even when it is tedious. Especially then. The value of the tenth identical sample of the morning is entirely a function of it having been handled exactly like the first.
  3. Calibrate, and know your own drift. Instruments drift. So do people. Counting LAGs late in the day gives you different numbers than counting them fresh, which is why you count twice, blind, on separate days. Internal quality control on a clinical analyser is the same idea with better funding.
  4. Report what is there. Not what was expected, not what would make a tidier result. The hardest sentence to write in a paper is we did not find it, and the hardest result to report on a bench is the one that does not fit the clinical picture. Both have to be written anyway.

The specimen changes. The obligation does not.

What the microscope taught first

Urine sediment microscopy and a stained bone section have an unexpected amount in common. Both are the business of looking at a small, cluttered field and deciding what is signal.

In a bone cross-section, the question is which of those concentric lines is a genuine LAG and which is a false line laid down in a cold week in June. In a sediment, it is whether that is a cast or an artefact, and whether the crystals mean anything or mean the sample sat too long.

In both cases the answer comes from the same three habits: know what the artefacts look like, look at enough fields before deciding, and be willing to write insufficient for interpretation rather than guess. Herpetology taught me those with a microscope trained on a toe bone. The laboratory simply changed the slide.

What is different

I should be fair about the differences, because there are real ones.

The stakes arrive faster. A mistake in a LAG count distorts a mean age in a paper that a few dozen people will read, and it can be corrected. A mistake on a clinical bench reaches a specific person, this week. That changes how it feels to work, and it should.

The season is gone. Fieldwork organises a year: you wait for spring, you work through summer, you write in winter. Laboratory work is the same on a Tuesday in February as in August. I miss the shape of it more than I expected to.

Nothing gets released. In the field, every animal you measure is put back exactly where you found it, and it walks off. That small transaction — take the measurement, give the animal back — was one of the things I liked best about the work.

Why I would recommend it

To anyone finishing a biology degree in Türkiye and worrying that a clinical or laboratory post means giving up on the science: it does not, as long as you go on being a biologist in it.

The reasoning you were trained in transfers completely. The ability to hold a question open, to distrust a clean result, to do the boring repetition properly — none of that is field-specific. It is just what being careful looks like, and it is as scarce in a laboratory as it is in a gorge.

The lizards, meanwhile, are still there. I still stop for them.
